The Texas Tech University Center at Junction makes available the expertise of various educators each summer. One who has shared his expertise, talent, time and heart with students at the Center this past summer is well-known artist/educator Dennis Fehr. Dennis Earl Fehr, Ed.D., Associate Professor of Visual Studies at Texas Tech University in Lubbock, coordinates the offerings of the School of Art at the TTU Center in Junction and also teaches visual studies courses to graduate students here.
Fehr and his wife Kristen and their two children, Lauren, who recently turned six, and Austin, age three, have spent the past two summers in Junction at the Center. In an article titled, "Making shelter from the storm, or Why I agreed to coordinate Texas Tech University's Junction Center Art Program," Fehr relates that "art teachers all over Texas call Junction an experience, not a place." He says he agreed to coordinate the program "because the world needs places like Junction." He further states that "by helping the Junction Experience to thrive, I'm helping Texas art teachers . . . make the world a better place." He says that those "who actually change the world walk a trail of small, relentless stepsthe trail of loving parents and dedicated teachers."
After ten years of teaching in kindergarten through 12th grade in public schools, Fehr was not content with the lack of importance given to art education. So he decided to earn a doctoral degree from the University of Illinois to have more influence through teaching students who would, in turn, become art teachers. Dr. Fehr has numerous publications to his credit and is a sought-after international speaker in his field.
